Roofing FAQ’s and Roofing Tips

What is hail damage?
Hail comes in different shapes and sizes. When these rock hard ice pellets hit your home they cause a variety of damages. Severe hailstorms can cause granular loss on shingles so keep an eye on your down spouts where the granule loss will be observed,

Also, hail can put holes in your siding and damage window screens. Your siding can become chipped, cracked or dented, and even damage the finish on your deck. Hail damage can compromise materials on the exterior of your home and lower the property value. Hail damage can be unseen from the ground and in many cases and will produce leeks in the future that can’t be diagnosed therefore these leaks can’t be attributed to a specific problem.

Large rains can enter a hail damaged area and saturate the mat, allowing the water to enter which goes on top of the roofing felt following the slope under the shingle until it finds an entry point.

Do I need someone to inspect my home for hail damage?

It is highly recommended that you contact a hail damage specialist for a thorough damage inspection of your home. There are many types of damages that can only be detected by trained eyes. Rapid Roofers provide a no-obligation inspection for hail damage and can make sure your insurance company pays for all damages caused by the storm.
When is the right time to call a hail damage specialist?
It is important that you call the hail damage specialist immediately after your home is hit by a storm. All damages must be recorded and documented for claims and Rapid Roofers will submit all required paper work to your insurance company.
Do I still need a professional inspector even if I don’t see any hail damage in my roof and siding?
Except in severe cases, hail damage to roofing and siding is very difficult to spot unless done by hail damage specialist. Hail damage that is not obvious from the naked eyes can be equally as dangerous as visible damage. When hail stones hit your roof, it causes a soft spot where the outer layer of granules will be very loose. Overtime the granules in these damaged spots will fall out, causing your roof to age and deteriorate drastically. This may also be true to siding and windows. Waiting will only worsen the damage, so Call immediately for an inspection.
Is hail damage covered by manufacturer’s warranty?
No but we can use our years of experience to make sure your insurance company does not avoid their responsibility.
Is hail damage covered by homeowners insurance?
Yes. Hail damage is covered by most common home insurance policies (HO-3). The amount of your insurance will vary according to the premiums and terms of your policy. Most insurance companies don’t want to give you a brand new roof. Many of our clients have been rejected because they did not have representation. But the good news is they did not give up and hired us to push back and we got them brand new roofs and we can do the same for you. In many cases the insurance company expects you to accept them at their word and have you believe there is no damage but 90% of the time when there is hail there is damage.

It is important that you have representation when dealing with Insurance companies.

What damages should I report to my insurance?
It is extremely important to properly inform your insurers of the full extent of the damage so they can accurately compensate for all losses covered.

Can a hail damage specialist process my claims?
Yes. In most cases, the hail damage specialist and Hail damage experts at Rapid Roofers are allowed to represent the homeowners with their insurance companies. In fact, we know exactly what insurance companies require and have the expertise to process the claims.

Do you have those pesky black streaks on your roof? It’s not mold. It’s probably not soot. It is a pervasive and prevalent alga known as Gloecapsa Magma. This alga grows a moisture-rich environment, usually supplied by the morning dew, the lack of direct sun, or shade. The first stains usually appear on the north-facing sides of a roof, which receives less light or areas with heavy tree coverage.

Like a cold, algae travels through the air, so if one neighbor receives a few algae spores, the whole neighborhood will soon be showcase the black streaks. Unfortunately, they love to feed on the calcium carbonate contained in most asphalt shingles. According to Tom Bollnow of the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), “The alga is mostly an aesthetic nuisance, although with time, the moisture retained in the algae can prematurely age the shingles.”

So, how do you clean your roof? First of all, think SAFETY first. We recommend Call a roof professional, like Rapid Roofers, especially if you have a steep roof. Secondly, the answer is “very carefully.” No pressure washing on your roof as this process will void your shingles warranty.
CLEANING YOUR ROOF
#1 – DO NOT USE CHLORINE BLEACH.
Bleach mixtures can injure sensitive plants. Because it is difficult to totally protect them from the mix, spray them down with clean water before applying any solutions for cleaning algae and immediately after, whether you cover them or not!

#2 – USE LOW PRESSURE APPLICATION.
Using a plastic pump-type garden sprayer, thoroughly soak the affected area with your choice of chemical. Allow it to sit for at least 5 minutes. Wash off all dirt and fungus residue. Again, we do not recommend pressure washing your roof!

#3 – WAIT FOR ROOF TO FULLY DRY.
Allow the roof to dry thoroughly. Inspect the roof for any remaining fungus. If it is slimy, or any sort of residue comes off on your hand, repeat the above steps. You must let the roof dry before a second application of mix. A second application of cleaner will not have its full effect on a damp surface!
WHAT CLEANING PRODUCTS CAN I USE?
As a licensed and insured Atlanta Roofing Contractor, Rapid Roofing recommends the following products. Please, test a small portion to your roof to ensure the product fits your needs.

#1 – SPRAY IT & FORGET IT
Spray and Forget is a new product for cleaning algae that offers a long-term solution to fungus problems. It is sprayed on and allowed to dry without rinsing. Though it is slow-acting when compared to bleach solutions, it can prevent mildew growth for years! If you want to see quick results, you can do a one-shot bleach cleaning. Rinse thoroughly, allow to dry and then apply Spray and Forget according to the instructions.

#2 – OXYGEN BLEACH POWDERS
With a good oxygen bleach, you will get out algae stains without exposing yourself and your family to toxic chemicals. Powdered oxygen bleach is made from natural soda ash or borax and hydrogen peroxide. Also, oxygen bleach works by releasing its oxygen once it is exposed to water. This leaves only borax or natural soda ash as the by-products, both of which are non-toxic to humans, animals and plants making them ideal for the person trying to live an eco-friendly lifestyle.

#3 – MOSS OUT!
If you have moss as well, then here is a great product choice. Moss Out! It comes in a number of formulations, one specifically for roofs and others designed to remove and/or inhibit moss and fungus growth on siding, masonry surfaces and even lawns. Their formula use tried and true zinc compounds that linger on surfaces to provide continuing protection from fungus regrowth.

Considering a slate roof for your home? Here are the top benefits and/or features of a slate roof that will help you decide if slate is right for your roof!

Many homeowners have questions when it comes to picking a material to put on their roof. Slate is a unique roofing material that is often overlooked because customers are unfamiliar with its value and capabilities. Before choosing slate roof, make sure you have all your questions and concerns answered by a professional roofing contractor. Below are a few of some of the most frequently asked questions regarding slate roofing.
What are the style and color options of slate roofing?
There are numerous slate roofing styles that range from textural and graduated installations to mixed colors and patterns. Two of the most common styles found in the US are the standard pattern style and the random width style. To view all styles and examples visit Slate Roof Central. Not only can slate vary in style, but also in texture, which can range from very smooth and uniform to very rough and rustic. The color of Slate ranges from muted to vibrant colors, greys and blacks are the most common colors but there are also greens, purples and reds.
What is the lifespan of slate roofing?
Slate is essentially a rock, a homogeneous metamorphic rock that is derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade regional metamorphism. Therefore, this roofing material is millions of years old. Slate is incredibly durable and can last several hundred years, often with little to no maintenance. It is safe to say that you will get at least 75 to 100 years or more out of your slate roof. However, it’s important that you do not put anything on your slate roof such as sealant or paint because this can cause the roof to age prematurely.
